Craigow / Clemens Hill
Clemens Hill is a boutique vineyard set in the rolling landscapes of Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, where history and winemaking come together in a truly picturesque setting. Originally part of the historic 1840s Craigow estate, the property was reimagined in the 1990s when Kevin and Jacqueline Wagner commissioned a classical Italian-inspired home, designed by architect Mike Viney. The surrounding vineyard, first planted by Dr John Sheppard, was enhanced with terraces that now provide sweeping views over the valley and Pittwater.
In 2013, Dr Rob Ware and Maria D’Ettorre became custodians of Clemens Hill. They elevated the vineyard’s potential by grafting new varieties, refining viticulture, and crafting wines that quickly gained a reputation for quality. Beyond the vines, they renovated the interiors, rebuilt the gardens, and introduced a welcoming new cellar door, ensuring visitors experience both elegance and authenticity.
Clemens Hill’s vineyards lie on north-east facing slopes shaped by ancient glaciers. At just 75 metres above sea level, they capture abundant Tasmanian sunshine while being cooled by maritime breezes. This unique climate, with modest rainfall supplemented by careful irrigation, produces wines that are expressive of place and crafted with respect for the land. Guided by a philosophy that values character over acclaim, Clemens Hill has nevertheless earned numerous accolades, reflecting its dedication to producing outstanding cool-climate wines.
