Domaine A Stoney Vineyard

Domaine A is a name synonymous with patience, precision, and uncompromising winemaking in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Established in 1973 on the historic Stoney Vineyard, the oldest in the valley, it was later transformed by Peter and Ruth Althaus, who set out to create an Antipodean counterpart to the grand estates of Europe. Their vision was bold: Bordeaux-inspired reds at the edge of the world. Today, that vision continues under the custodianship of Mona’s founder David Walsh and winemaker Conor van der Reest, with Domaine A recognised among Australia’s finest producers.
Domaine A winemaking
The philosophy has always been simple: let the fruit speak for itself and never rush the process. If the fruit isn’t perfect, the wine doesn’t get made. Harvest waits for optimal ripeness, no matter the weather. Wines are only released when they reach their peak, even if that means years of cellaring. Every stage of production is done with care by hand, from pruning and harvesting to pressing and racking.
On the estate’s eleven hectares, cabernet sauvignon takes centre stage alongside cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, and pinot noir.
Lady A, their acclaimed oaked sauvignon blanc, offers a white counterpart inspired by Bordeaux traditions. For approachable, drink-now styles, the Stoney Vineyard label delivers elegant reds, whites, and rosé.
Set against Jurassic dolerite soils and a cool maritime climate, each vintage reflects the Coal River Valley’s unique terroir. Domaine A’s wines are not bound by convention or varietal typicity, but instead carry distinct personalities that honour their place of origin while rivaling the best of Europe.
