Uplands Vineyard
Uplands Vineyard is one of the Coal River Valley’s most historic and picturesque properties. Established in 1823 by John Petchey, a former convict turned entrepreneur, Uplands has been a place of transformation, resilience, and agricultural richness for over two centuries. Once part of Tasmania’s “Granary of Australia,” the estate thrived on crops of apricots, quinces, pears, and grains, alongside sheep farming. Today, under the stewardship of Michael and Debbie Ryan, the vineyard continues this legacy with a focus on premium cool-climate wines.
In 1998, the Ryans planted chardonnay vines, later joined by sparkling and Pinot Noir, which Tasmanian Vintners now craft into award-winning wines. The vineyard’s boutique size allows for exceptional quality, with every grape benefiting from the Coal River Valley’s unique climate of long sunny days and cool nights.
Visitors are welcome to experience the historic grounds, original stonework, and charming cellar door. Each tasting is a journey through time and terroir, where every bottle tells a story of passion, persistence, and place.
After enjoying a tasting, relax in the beautiful gardens or book a private event that combines Uplands wines with Tasmania’s finest local produce.
